What to Wear to Your Session

outfit ideas for what to wear to a beach session

my guide on what to wear for your session:

You’re looking to book an engagement/couples session? Or maybe you already have one booked and you’re unsure what you should wear to your engagement session. This is my advice to my clients whenever they might ask me “but what should we wear?”

I tell them to bring options to wear for their session!

I allow couples to bring along what they might consider wearing for their photos. This way, I can help chose outfits that will complement each other and the location we’re in.

What colors do we wear to our session?

I typically suggest simple clothing focusing on neutrals and muted colors. These options will allow for a lot of focus on the two of you.

Also, choose colors that compliment your skin tone! For example, if you have a fair skin tone stay away from bright and light colors and plain black. Or if you have more of an olive skin tone/darker skin, stay away from reds, oranges, yellows, and pinks.

Stay away from fluorescents that might reflect onto the other person in the photos.

Say you’d like to wear a more bold color, have your partner wear balance it out by wearing a simple white or black outfit.

Patterns and textures?

If you’d like to incorporate a pattern, I suggest only one piece of clothing has a subtle pattern. great options are small florals or subtle plaid flannels.
Try to avoid thick striped sweaters or clothing with chevron patterns. Often these thick patterns will distract from your face in the end result of the photos.

Lastly, comfort over looks!
Wear what you’re comfortable in. If you’re uncomfortable in your outfit you may not feel confident. If you’re dressed in a way that represents yourself you’ll be able to enjoy the photos a lot more.

Jake & Haley Couples Session

Here’s a great example of patterns. Jake & Haley stuck to neutral tones for their North Carolina session and Haley’s dress has a very subtle striped texture/pattern. Overall, these details gave lots of details to the images.

Max & Amber Couple Session

Here’s another great example of patterns and matching. Max & Amber stuck to darker colors, the subtle plaid on Max’s shirt and his dark blue jeans are a great way to balance Amber’s plain black dress.

Braden & Juliana Engagement Session

Here’s an example of simple and comfortable. Juliana & Braden both wore outfits that they were comfortable in. This made them a lot more comfortable in front of the camera. Their engagement photos really portray who they are.

I hope this helps you decide what to wear to your engagement session!
